Post image for Windows Phone 7, 2 Steps Back

I had such high hopes for Windows Phone 7.  Understand I am a huge fan of Windows Mobile today despite watching its technology eclipsed by other phones.  All the features of Windows Phone 7 Series looked fantastic. Despite the last several dark years as a Windows Mobile fan I believed Microsoft had finally responded with the perfect phone.  So far we have seen XBOX Live Gaming, Netflix Streaming, Social Networking integration and a decent looking prototype.  Then as if they spit in the face of everything there is to love about Windows Mobile they decided not to include copy and paste in Windows Phone 7.  You think the stupidity ended there, no, Windows Phone 7 will not have multi-tasking.  This is a clean break for Microsoft from Windows Mobile and I believe this will be my break as a Windows Mobile user.

No Copy and Paste. WTF!

No copy and paste is the dumbest decision I have ever seen. I have 5 brothers so I have seen a lot of stupid things. In a quote on cnet.com Todd Brixx a Windows Phone Executive said

We don’t enable copy and paste and we do that very intentionally

According to the article Todd Brix went on to say

many times when a user copies something on a phone, what they really are looking to do is take a specific action, such as calling a phone number or e-mailing an address. For those specific tasks, Microsoft has what it calls “smart linking,” which lets a user double click on a phone number and either call it or add it to the phone book. For an address, one can get a map without having to copy and paste the address.

There was plenty of other dumb statements but this was the kicker

We tried to focus on what the core use cases were. Certainly there will be some people that won’t be happy with some of those decisions

I understand that Microsoft is playing the 80/20 rule, but 80% of the users have left and the 20% remaining you are pissing off.  It took apple three generations to build the best mobile implementation of copy and paste and Windows Phone 7 will intentionally start at a disadvantage.  You cannot be serious is the enemy working at Microsoft?  Are the people making the decisions intentionally trying to sink the ship?  It’s like taking power steering away from a luxury car and saying that is not what most people wanted. Apple got roasted for not having copy and paste. And in one swoop Microsoft decides it is not important. I am so frustrated. IF you are going to copy the stupid iPhone don’t copy the mistakes too!!

No Multi-Tasking

The title of this article was two steps back and the reason why was because Windows Phone 7 will NOT have true multitasking after all. Instead, Windows Phone 7 will support a push notification called Microsoft Notification Service (MNS). The MNS works just like the iPhone use to, and I say use too because the next version of the iPhone is rumored to have multi-tasking.

I cannot take the constant disappointments any longer.  I am going to look at the Nexus One tomorrow. This is unbearable. These are two huge features to the Windows Phone faithful. How does Microsoft justify no multitasking, poor battery life. OMG they are sheep following the words of Steve Jobs.  If you have a Smartphone and don’t know that battery life is not the same as having a regular phone then tough, tough cream-puff. It’s a mini computer in your pocket what do you expect? Sorry, didn’t mean to yell it’s not your fault Microsoft has put me in a bad mood. I have never felt so betrayed in my life!

I want to sing to the heavens that you have finally seen the light. I want to laugh because you finally realize the foundation of your beliefs in Windows Mobile was a house of cars, resting on a bed of sand.

I won’t gloat. I won’t tease you. I won’t laugh, And I won’t do my chicken dance. I will just ask a single question. WHY IN THE HELL ARE YOU NOT COMING TO THE IPHONE!

You chose the blue pill (Matrix reference) and decided to wake up and let the story end. Microsoft has validated the iPhone software, design, and philosophy. You believed in Microsoft before so believe. Now come over to the iPhone :-)

I am a movie nut great reference!! (no need to explain)

I am disappointed not insane. Apple has it’s own Matrix called iTunes. And they want the whole world plugged into it. I would rather stay out of there all together.

this was a fun announcement. I enjoyed every moment of this post.

Personally I still don’t get the Multli-tasking need. It kills battery life. I just wish I could run 1 app in the background on my iphone. I don’t need to run 5. That’s one of the reasons I hated my windows mobile 6.5 phone (and that it sucked…), it’s battery life was horrid, due to too many apps running mostly.

Let me give you an example. I have my GPS software AT&T Navigator. It gets me where i need to go. When i am in unknown areas i like to know where the speed traps are. SO i use Trapster. I have Trapster running in the background while ATT Navigator is on the screen. The phone is plugged in no battery issue. It should have been an option not an absolute.

      Right on!
Multi-Tasking should behave like badges or notification. The user decides what gets this advanced option. I would like internet radio to work in the background or I want the Kindle App to sync my books in the background. You get the point.

Battery life is critical but if you have a need for background apps the decision should be your not Apple’s or Microosft’s vendor.

Chris can we get a picture of you unboxing your new phone that is NOT a Windows Mobile device? ;-)

If you get the shakes due to the withdraw from WIndows Mobile. Call an Apple Support Group near you.

I am going to frame this post.

I like Chris’ question of ‘what is good battery life’? I use the Motorola Droid, overclocked to 1 GHz, and I run a LOT of stuff in the background. I never turn off the GPS. And I still consistently get 14 hours or more of battery life between recharges. Yes, I can chew it faster than that, but it MY choice. And I do have the choice. I much prefer that to the alternative.
