Going somewhere fun this summer? Doing something outrageous or insane? Make sure you capture it in all it’s glory with the right photo equipment. It’s actually cheaper than you think. I recently had the wonderful opportunity to spend a week in the US Virgin Islands, on St. Thomas and St. John. We spent a lot of time on and in the water. And I wanted to capture it for memory’s sake.
GoPro HD HERO 960
Developed for professional use, but at a consumer price, the HD HERO 960 wearable cameras captures full HD video rivaling cameras costing 10x the price. How? Our team consists of some of the the brightest minds in Silicon Valley who also happen to be obsessed with outdoor sports, race cars, and all things moto. Athletic super geeks? Indeed.
I did some research and decided to try the GoPro HD HERO 960 wearable camera. For about $100 more, I could have also upgrade to true full 1080p HD video version, but figured that would be just a bit of over-kill for me. The camera uses rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and saves video/photos to an SDHC card. Best of all, the kit includes a bump- and water-proof housing and a bunch of different mounting methods: camera tripod, helmet, chest strap, wrist strap, etc. Just about any way you can think to use it, you can mount it. The transparent lens cover is replaceable, for when you bang it up or scratch it. The buttons work underwater. It has different back: waterproof, better sound, etc. The camera takes video in several formats and resolutions (most of mine was shot in 1280×960 960p 30 fps, which was very acceptable. You can also mount the camera somewhere unobtrusive and set it to take a 5 MP photo every few seconds for up to several hours.
