During a talk at the Barclays Capital conference on Wednesday, Lowell McAdam of Verizon Wireless said that he could sell “twice†the number of the Droid Incredible that he has available. That has to be hard to deal with, and helps explain the relative lack of marketing for this device. During that talk, McAdam was very clear as to the cause: component shortages and more specifically the Samsung-sourced AMOLED display. This screen is VERY popular in the latest devices and will likely remain in short supply for some time yet. Any new phone that is currently in the marketplace or soon to be announced will suffer the same fate, if it is based on the same component.
In the case of Verizon, they have again begun taking online orders, but it is for a ‘mid-June’ delivery of the Droid Incredible. As the Nexus One uses the same screen, this would help explain it’s relative scarcity as well. Of course, we should also point out that Samsung is using the same displays in it’s own devices, so it makes you wonder how all that works.
