I was recently introduced to a device called the PocketDock by SendStation. The PocketDock is designed to send high quality audio from iPhone or iPod to a home stereo. After talking to a friend about the PocketDock we found it could be uses an adapter for a mini usb cable to charge an iPhone. If you think about a universal charging system, such as iGo EveryWhere, the PocketDock would essentially be a tip for a mini USB charger.
I have used iGo Charging solutions so I had to consider if the pricing was comparable. The PocketDock at $29.95 can be connected to both a car or wall mini USB adapters to charge the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. In contrast for about $25 an iGo Everywhere Universal Wall and Auto Charger ($14.99) plus an iGo iPhone tip ($9.64) makes a great portable charging solution.
I had a challenge with the SendStation as a charging solution since all my devices charge via micro vs. mini USB. I could introduce a mini to micro USB adapter, but this creates a more complex solution. I think the best solution is up to you and depends on what you currently own for me I need to carry less and smaller items.
