The only issue with turn-by-turn navigation on your smartphone is the abrupt interruption you experience with navigation when you receive or place a call. On a recent trip one of my iPhone fiends elected to carry his iPod Touch in addition to his iPhone as a dedicated navigation device once cradled in the TomTom Car Kit for iPhone.
In our review of TomTom navigation for iOS we found it to be one of the better navigation apps available on iOS. Considering TomTom, like most navigation software for iOS, has all maps installed locally this mean all you need is a GPS signal for the iPod Touch and you are in business for turn-by-turn navigation.
Considering most BlackBerry users also carry a iPod Touch the TomTom Car Kit is a natural choice to add navigation to the music and gaming features of the iPod. I am not sure my iPod Touch will come out of retirement however the idea of not having the call screen rip you out of navigation is an appealing idea. Maybe one day Apple, Google, and Microsoft will figure out a way to have an incoming not fully take over the screen of important things like navigation?
