Skype for iPhone 4

Skype has delivered on the long awaited video calling from mobile devices. Today iPhone users are now getting video calling capabilities via Skype.  If you consider the install basis of skype and the ability to call from iPhone to computer for video calls the benefit is clear. Additionally, Skype supports video out on iPhone 3GS/4 and iPod Touch 4th gen.  Video calling is supported via WiFi and 3G. This release was expected at CES and hopefully it will be available to many 4G / LTE devices hitting the market in early 2011. FaceTime is a great video platform for iPhone or Mac users, but Skype will likely overshadow FaceTime as it adds support for additional mobile platforms. Imagine desktop (Windows, Mac, or Linux) users video chatting with iPhone, BlackBerry, iPad, Playbook, Windows Phone, or Android users. Hopefully an announcement from CES will have this coming to other mobile platforms. [click to continue…]

Free Upgrade to GV Mobile + Available for 1 Day Only

GV Mobile +

In July of 2009 GV Mobile was pulled from the Apple’s App Store because, “it duplicated functionality that existed on the iPhone.” The removal of GV Mobile happened at the same time Apple rejected the Google Voice app submitted by Google. Apple said they never rejected the app but none the less Google did an end around and provided a right web app that provided mobile access to Google Voice from the iPhone. I was one of the many users of GV Mobile and I am happy to see the app return under the new name GV Mobile +. [click to continue…]

Hardware Review: Apple iPod Touch 2010

iPod Touch

The new iPod Touch offers one huge new feature and that is a camera. Beyond that, it is really the same old iPod Touch. The ability to use FaceTime or any of a growing number of video chatting applications will prove to be one of the best features on mobile devices in the coming months. The iPod Touch is a slender device and despite its size, it still feels well crafted. I personally hope to see a GPS function hit the iPod Touch some time soon as it will make using Nike+ that much better, but the way it is implemented by Apple really requires 3G, at least with today’s technology. If you are looking for reasons to part with your money, then look no further than this device: dual camera’s, A4 processor, and a variety of apps that will drain money out of your pockets 99¢ at a time.

BlackBerry and iPod Touch Are Like Peanut Butter and Jelly

iPod Touch and BlackBerry

I know every BlackBerry user does not own an iPod Touch but the combination is can be as common as peanut butter and jelly. Today I was sitting in a meeting where every user at the table had a Blackberry and 4 of the 6 people also owned an iPod Touch. As we got to talking about it we all came to the same conclusion, that the BlackBerry is the king when it comes to anything related to communication (messaging and phone). In contrast, the iPod Touch, is great at the multi-media and application stuff. Yeah I know ground breaking details. The thing is, we ALL wanted an iPod Touch with a 3G data option like the iPad and a camera. No one wants the iPhone (as a phone) as we all want to avoid paying again for voice minute we did not plan to use. [click to continue…]

I realize I am a geek but my friend showed me another level. I was hanging out with my friend a couple months back when we heard a fire truck going by.  He grabbed his iPod Touch and started listening in on the emergency radio information.  I suddenly realized he was a geek of a totally different kind.  The app he was using is called Emergency Radio and here is what he likes about it.

Today’s Apple’s iAd announcement turned out to be pretty big news. Frankly, there are some attractive factors around this announcement, as well as some disturbing lacks. But I read a comment from the SimpleMobileReview.com site this morning that I really think hits the mark:
