It is very rare that I touch a piece of technology and my initial experience is negative. In part, devices usually get good initial reviews just due to the excitement of working with something new. You would think flaws would highlight themselves, but excited users are prone to dismiss minor bugs or bad workflow. After the newness wears off, you can finally start to see a product for what it is. Now this theory does not always follow true, especially when the issues take you out of the ‘good’ experience. For example, after waiting 4 weeks for my iPhone 4, I have spent 2 full days with AT&T trying to determine why my phone could not accept SMS messages from carriers other than AT&T. I know every BlackBerry user does not own an iPod Touch but the combination is can be as common as peanut butter and jelly. Today I was sitting in a meeting where every user at the table had a Blackberry and 4 of the 6 people also owned an iPod Touch. As we got to talking about it we all came to the same conclusion, that the BlackBerry is the king when it comes to anything related to communication (messaging and phone). In contrast, the iPod Touch, is great at the multi-media and application stuff. Yeah I know ground breaking details. The thing is, we ALL wanted an iPod Touch with a 3G data option like the iPad and a camera. No one wants the iPhone (as a phone) as we all want to avoid paying again for voice minute we did not plan to use. [click to continue…]
There is a really good reverse call lookup and call blocking application for the BlackBerry out there from First Orion called PrivacyStar and it has just been updated with some pretty cool new features. The first is SmartBlock which uses crowdsourced data from other PrivacyStar users to automatically block undesirable numbers on your device. PrivacyStar has also added a Do Not Disturb feature that automatically routes incoming calls to voicemail and sends an SMS text to the caller acknowledging their call.
Anyone that had high hopes that domestic calls over Skype would not use your voice plan need to think again. It’s makes sense for Verizon because so many people would reduce their voice plans in favor of Skype. I do wonder if International calls to domestic numbers over Skype will use Skype minutes. Essentially, you in the UK and calling back to the US that is when using Skype minutes is critical. I called Verizon and 3 different customer service agents said calls from outside the US over Skype back to a US number DO NO USE SKYPE. See the Verizon FAQ if you have questions. I really hope these three people are WRONG!!

Auto Text is a feature on the Blackberry OS I really miss since moving to Android. I respond to about a hundred emails daily from my mobile device. Responses can be identical if not similar for a variety of reasons. For example [click to continue…]
