National Do Not Call Registry

There are days I feel like a dinosaur because I still have a home phone.  Most people are switching to mobile phones only and ditching the traditional “home phone”. With the switch comes an increasing amount of telemarketers calling mobile phones.  Most people admit they are getting bombarded by these annoying telemarketing calls.  My mom almost did not take my call today because she did not recognize my OnStar Phone number.  The first problem is I need to update my contact information on her phone. I have to add my OnStar number. Next, I need to help her cut down on the telemarketing calls.  I almost feel like I failed my mom by not telling her how to stop these calls before.

I think most people forget that you can register your mobile phone number along with your home number on the Do Not Call Registry. For those who don’t remember this National Registry was created by the Government. Telemarketers must check this list before they call a number.

Here is the quote from the site

The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free.

Not all calls will stop because not all telemarketers are under the jurisdiction of the FCC which maintains the list. People like political organizations or a company that you may have signed a document giving them the right to call you would not be stopped.(Read What You Sign!) But it should at least help reduce the amount of calls you get.

Just go to www.donotcall.gov and fill out the online form. You can register up to three phone numbers at a time. If you have more numbers you will have to go back again to register the rest. You can also call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to register but this can only be done one at a time.

Once you are on the list, the telemarketers have 31 days to remove your number from their database. So get on the list.

If you are a BlackBerry user you should check out PrivacyStar. You can set it up to automatically block calls from telemarketers and report those calling you even though you may be listed in the do not call registry. It also does reverse number lookups so it can tell you who is calling if you don’t recognize the number.

There was some really good info about actually COLLECTING $$$ from these telemarketers @ killthecalls.com. Apparently you can get $500 to $1500 when these guys break the FTC’s laws.
