LastPass

We received a voicemail from one of our users about some challenges using LastPass on his Sprint HTC Hero. LastPass has become a favorite password manager among many of my friends over the last couple months.  The challenges our caller was having were actually some of the things I briefly covered in an early article about LastPass. He had two main issues

1. He could not figure out how to get LastPass to enter the password information in his Tripit web app on Android
2. He could not figure out how to use LastPass to access sites on his Android Phone.

For the issue with Tripit this was actually rather easy but only because I have been using so many mobile apps it just feels natural to me now. Although Tripit is a web app it launches the Android browser inside the app. What I have done on my phone to make it work seamlessly is this:

1. Open LastPass and Find the Tripit

Press and Hold on the Tripit App until a dialog pops up.

2. Select Copy Password

Once you have copied the password you can go back to TripiT and paste the password. To paste on Android you press and hold on the field you want to insert the text on. When the dialog appears select paste.

The second challenge is rather simple and is answered in the screen shot above. To auto fill credentials with LastPass all you need to do is click the launch button. Another way to launch a website with an auto fill for the username and password is to do the following.

Find the Site you want to launch

Click once on the site name to show the screen that allows you to edit the site. Now press the menu key on your Android phone and select launch.

Just as you would expect LastPass automatically fills in the credentials on the web form. Something that is important to understand is LastPass does not extend other browsers rather it hosts a browser window inside the LastPass application. This is not a LastPass limitation rather a limitatation of mobile browsers. Personally, I hope Opera and the Dolphin browsers could add support for LastPass but maybe I am being wishful.

It is not as seemless of an experience as working on the desktop but it still works. I said in my earlier article I would like to see the default click behavior result in launching the website vs editing a credential. I do believe that if this was the case our caller would not have had the same initial issue. Either way he is up and working and has 2 days left of his LastPass eval. I wish we could have helped him earlier so his evaluation period was not cut short.
