Is Dell Dropping Windows Phone 7?

by Chris on August 27, 2010

Post image for Is Dell Dropping Windows Phone 7?

Please tell me that there is not any truth to this story. Engadget.com has cited a story from a TechCrunch analyst that sates Dell is dropping Windows Phone 7. Now normally I would not care about something like this but the Dell Windows Phone ( the lightning) that was leaked earlier this year looked fantastic. It was a really good looking phone. And to add insult to injury this is the one that I was really leaning towards getting. Now Engadget asked that we take this news with a grain of salt so I should respect that. But I am really waiting for Dell to come out and refute this story as quickly as possible. Say it ain’t so Dell, say it ain’t so. We will definitely have to keep an eye on this story.

HTC Droid Incredible Android 2.2 Update Begins Today

by Rod on August 27, 2010

Droid Incredible

The Verizon support Twitter account, @VZWSupport, sent out and update the the HTC Incredible would start getting Android 2.2 today (8/27/2010).  This means that the manual update instructions will be coming shortly once the file hits the Google servers.  For those that rooted this is a non event, but for the vast majority of users this update will give the users access to many great new features.  If you cannot wait for the update keep you eye open for the manual install instructions because the staged rollout can take a week or more to hit many handsets.

Windows Phone 7, Android, And iPhone 4 Email Client Comparison

by Chris on August 27, 2010

Post image for Windows Phone 7, Android, And iPhone 4 Email Client Comparison

There have been a lot of videos and write-ups about Windows Phone 7. And for all that I have seen and read, I am really enjoying the videos done by pocketnow.com This is the second comparison video I have seen from them and I have to say very good job. The biggest thing that I noted is that based on basic usage all things are pretty even between the three phones. Now of course anyone doing corporate email on Android should be using Touchdown but this demo was based on built in capabilities. The thing that I found surprising is that There wasn’t really any feature of the iPhone that I liked over Android and Windows Phone 7. In fact the opposite was true. Both Windows Phone 7 and Android have features that make email a bit easier to use. [click to continue…]

Developers Port Your iPhone App to Windows Phone 7

by Chris on August 27, 2010

Post image for Developers Port Your iPhone App to Windows Phone 7

I have said it before and I will say it again. In fact, I can’t say it enough. Every Mobile developer should build apps for ALL mobile platforms. It just makes sense. You have more opportunity to make money. You could even build the cool app that bridges the gap between Android, iPhone, Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry.  Now I know the first thing that any iPhone developer is going to say is that they do not want to take the time to port their app over. The also may think that that it is too difficult to bring the app over. Fortunately, there is a site taking time to help you.

Update Motorola Droid to Android 2.2 Running Flash 10.1

by Rod on August 27, 2010

Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1

Waiting for OTA updates takes a large amount of patience or you can just manually perform the update.  This is not a root process rather the approved update without the wait.

Instructions to manually install Android 2.2 Froyo (FRG22D) on the Original Motorola Droid

  1. Download OS update from Google
  2. Rename the downloaded file to update.zip (avoid naming update.zip.zip)
  3. Copy the file to the root of your microSD Card.
  4. Power off the phone
  5. Hold the Power button and the X key on the physical keyboard (This will boot into recovery mode)
  6. When you see the /!\ triangle with an exclamation point release both keys
  7. Press the Volume up and Camera button at the same time
  8. Using the D-Pad (aka mouse pad on the keyboard) select apply update.zip
  9. Press the D-Pad down
  10. The update should run and the phone will reboot once completed

This is the same process for updating or installing any ROM on the Motorola Droid.  This process is for non rooted phones or those phones running the currently available ROM from Verizon.

iPhone 4: Double the Battery Life with the Mili PowerSpring

by Rod on August 27, 2010

MiLi PowerSpring

Mili PowerSpring 4 provides extended or double battery life for iPhone 4 users.  Considering I just returned my iPhone 4 today I guess I need to order one of these for an iPhone friend to give it a test.  My father-in-law uses the MiLi Powerskin on his iPhone 3GS and that has saved him during several power outages.  The form factor of the iPhone is perfect for these battery cases and there are numerous options but the Mili and Mophie Juice Pack stand out as the best.  The MiLi is available on Amazon for $85.  The MiLi is a 1600mAH Li-Pol battery and super thin.  If your iPhone is often sitting in the red zone for battery life consider the MiLi. Newsy Releases Version 2.1 for the Apple iPad

by Rod on August 26, 2010

Newsy 2.1

When I initially saw Newsy I thought this was a great concept.  It aggregates news from multiple sources and delivers it to you on the iPad.  You get some analysis, but it is video news vs text which hits a broader audience.  Newsy recently updated to versions 2.1 for the iPad which is a minor update to improve usability and social networking.  Newsy is also available for the iPhone and Android devices.  Press release after break

NetFlix Update adds iPhone and iPod Touch Compatibility

by Rod on August 26, 2010

Netflix for iPhone and iPod Touch

Netflix is already a great service but updating so iPhone and iPod Touch users and enjoy is something we all saw coming.  Considering the iPod Touch is about to get a bump this will be a welcome upgrade after the Apple September 1 Special Event.  This is likely a good positioning move for NetFlix considering everyone is expecting Apple to get into the Streaming Movie and TV business.  Download NetFlix for your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Trillian for BlackBerry is Available in App World for $4.99

by Rod on August 26, 2010

Trillian for BlackBerry

Trillian for BlackBerry is available in BlackBerry App World for $4.99.  Trillian on the desktop has  been a favorite for many that use multiple IM products through out the day.  Trillian allows you to connect to Windows Live Messenger, Facebook Chat, Yahoo, AIM/ICQ, Google Talk, MySpace, Astra or Jabber.  It provides and all in one IM client for those that want a consolidated window for IM.  I have never been a Trillian fan on the desktop but on a mobile device where resources are limited this is a good alternative to running multiple IM clients.  I wonder if BB users will need this of if they just result to BBM, SMS, and Email when mobile.
