With all the smartphones, tablets, cameras, bluetooth headsets, or other USB devices you need to keep charged, it always seems like one needs a boost when you are not near a power outlet. Having a portable or emergency battery charger is becoming much more essential, especially if you have a large screen, power hungry smartphone. However, the iPad, Galaxy Tab, and BlackBerry Playbook each use 2+ amps for faster charging. In our testing, the iPad did trickle charge, but the Galaxy Tab would only charge when powered off.

If you need an ultra portable mobile charger you can keep in your pocket, then the Energizer XP2000 or Energizer XP1000 is a better choice. In contrast, if you need to power multiple devices like I frequently require, then the i.Sound Portable Power Max is likely better as it has 5 USB ports.
There are literally hundreds of options for portable USB battery packs but the New Trent is one of the better options. It has a small form-factor and a large capacity, allowing you to get multiple charges or power a device for an extended period of time. Keep in mind that your 3G or 4G hotspot could live all day off the New Trent. I have found these chargers are most useful in an airport, where outlets are difficult to find or perhaps relaxing by the pool or the beach.
