Microsoft is using the Tellme service as the speech recognition engine on Windows Phone 7. They showed a demo of the voice control a little while ago and now they are are pumping up the Tellme service at the 2010 SpeechTEK Conference.Zig Serafin, general manager of the Speech Group at Microsoft, delivered a keynote address describing Microsoft’s vision for speech and natural user interfaces. While they were really covering all the aspects of these interfaces for now the important one is Phone 7.

Windows Phone 7. Microsoft is raising the bar for mobile device interactions with the development of Windows Phone 7. Speech has been seamlessly integrated into the phone experience, for functions such as search, navigation and dialing.

I really loved Voice Command on Windows Phone so I am very interested in the Tellme Service on Phone 7. According to Microsoft Tellme uses a cloud-based architecture for speech. With the architecture having billions of speech interactions running on the Microsoft Tellme speech cloud, this can be used to improve the underlying recognition engine and improve the understanding of a user’s intent. This kind of reminds me of my Logitech Remote. Using the power of many to improve the system.

Here is an awesome example of how you can use the service

Windows Phone 7, users of the Bing voice search technology will be able to ask, “Who is pitching for the Giants tonight?” and get a listing of starting pitchers as well as ticket and weather information for the game. This represents a more natural experience for the user.

I am not sure how much we will be able to do at launch but I can’t wait to put it through its paces.
