If you are in a situation like me, you probably find yourself with a chore on your hands to manage your applications on your Android device. It’s nice to have a lot and we imagine all the situations where we would use it, vs. just clogging up the device with apps that we never use for anything except consuming space on a limited-space system. I would like to introduce you to one tool that you may like to use to manage those apps: FolderOrganizer.
FolderOrganizer
Organize Applications, Bookmarks and Contacts using labels. FolderOrganizer is the evolution of Apps Organizer, it allows you to create a folder (a “label shortcut”) with a custom icon on Android home (long touch on home and select shortcut).
FolderOrganizer is available in Android Market in two versions:
- Folder Organizer lite: ad-supported version
- Folder Organizer: full version
Other features:
- change icon of a folder
- change icon and rename an application
- icon pack support
- home shortcut to labels and items (applications, bookmarks and contacts)
- assign a label to multiple items in a simple way
- hierarchical labels (only in full version)
- direct folder editing (only in full version)
A New Way to Organize Apps
Rather than creating folders and copying apps into those folders, the philosophy of FolderOrganizer is to either auto- or manually assign “labels” to each app. Apps can have multiple labels assigned, so that you can see them in different groupings. Because this is not associated with a folder, it is easy to transfer these labels if you choose to use different home screens. If you are using the default Launcher, if it allows, you can create a folder to use to group applications. If you then change to a different Launcher (Home++, Panda Home, HelixLauncher, etc.) then you automatically lose all folders or groups that you had setup (if the Launcher or Home even allowed it, which not all do). When you use an application like FolderOrganizer, although those label folders may disappear from the Home screen, they are easy to replace in a new Launch by just long-pressing the screen and choosing to put the label back. This is a major positive those those of you, who like me, change Launchers on a regular basis.
The first screenshot shows a label folder for “Apps”. I have it set to automatically sort and if I add an app and label it, it will show up here. Because I have the full version, I also have other options like dropping an app on the folder and it will be added to the label and I can also delete directly from the folder. In the second screenshot, you can see a contact (my wife) on the main home screen. If I press the icon, it gives me the choice of how I want to do the contact. If I choose one of the icons, then it will show me all the options. It really beats having to dig through the list of contacts, and even if you search, you have to deal with the keyboard. I have only been using FolderOrganizer for a few days, but I can already tell that it is a keeper for me. I really like the ability to move the label grouping between Launchers and there is no space penalty if I want to have an app assigned to two labels.
Take a look and see if FolderOrganizer might help you deal with your Android apps. Enjoy!
