Russ, you can take just about any audio file and turn it into an MPEG-4 file. From there, just rename it to m4b (as opposed to m4a). It's the 'b' part that toggles on the place saving (auto-bookmarking). Unfortunately, I am not a Windows 7 Phone user, so I can't tell you what particular app to use, but if you search carefully, I am sure that you will find one that supports m4a/m4b. Then, feel free to review this post again for tips on the conversion process. If you can do without the bookmarking, you can just use the MP3 files. Make sure you look at the notes above for combining the files in larger units, so you don't have to deal with hundreds of tiny files. :-)

I hate when companies take forever to create an app. So I feel your pain. If any one of us knows how to do it it will be Brent. So I am sure he will respond with some guidance.

i have been an audiobook fan for several years (on my iPhone). I switched to Windows Phone 7 and am now very upset to find no audiobook player. Any way that you can recommend for me to use the thousands of public library downloadable audiobooks on my new (WP7) device? Perhaps somehow convert them to a podcast format?

Hi, and thank you for this very helpful article.
? what devices will play .m4b files ( for audio lectures) . . .with Bookmarking . . .
that are not Apple products, so you don't lose your place when listening to a lecture?

Downloadable courses from "The Great Courses" Teaching Company (www.teach12.com ) are available as mp3 or .m4b .

They say, download MPEG-4 (later defined as files with a .m4b extension)
Will these only have bookmarking available for Apple products? Or, can I buy a different device that will have the same capability, e.g. will a Zune work jsut as well?
Thanks

[...] I quickly scanned Simple Mobile Review and was surprised that I had not yet created a post with instructions for taking an Audio CD and converting it to an audiobook. Since my friend is a Mac user, this article will focus on ripping audio books using a Mac. We are also writing a post How to Make Audiobooks from Audio CD’s for Windows Users, but until then checkout Listening to Audiobooks on your mobile device [...]
