Getting Your iPhone Early May Help Release Day Activations Challenges

Verizon iPhone

I decided to order the iPhone 4 from Apple vs. Verizon. My concern was Verizon would not deliver on release day. Fast forward 4 days and Verizon Pre-order customers are unboxing their iPhones, while Apple orders will arrive 1 day later. I have received several emails from friends who have received their Verizon iPhones and are extremely happy.

Initially, I thought the early iPhone deliveries were several isolated mistakes. Now, seeing the number of devices delivered it would appear Apple and Verizon want devices delivered early. When the iPad released, several devices got delivered early, then like an iron fist coming down, many packages out for delivery had their status magically changed to hold. You have to wonder why with the Verizon iPhone they would allow early delivery. The only logical reason is to avoid activation issues. Staggered deliveries would solve that problem. Add to that the fact that Verizon has specifically stated that they want to reward those existing customers who have waited so long and are those who were allowed to order early. What great customer service!

The world has watched AT&T and Apple struggle every summer to handle activation demand. It is possible Verizon and Apple expect unprecedented demand on launch day. Dealing with pre-ordered unit now will help avoid activation delays on February 10th.

If I were an Apple shareholder, I would be waiting for the Q1 2011 earnings call when they announce units sold. My iPhone won’t arrive until tomorrow, however I am happy for all those lucky enough to enjoy the first iPhone in the US with good call quality.

My iPhone is currently on the truck for delivery. I hope the call quality is similar to my BlackBerry Bold 9650.
