Feed Push

RSS is a great way to stay up to date on constantly updating websites without having to visit them constantly. I have a friend who is not technical and who wanted to get updated when new content posted on several websites she frequently visits. As with many users, she currently visits the sites when she remembers to do so.

The more we talked about the problem, the more I realized that what she really wanted was to be notified when there was new content, so she could go to the site and read it. I did point her to our article that I had done in the past about subscribing to RSS using Microsoft Outlook. After further discussion, I found that what she wanted was new article notifications on her phone, just like she receives for new email notification. She had little to no interest in using an RSS client to read content. The solution was perfect, we found a great app called Feed Push.

Feed Push allows you to enter the RSS feed address for a site and the notifications/badges show up on your iPhone when new content is added to the site. It does exactly what she wanted to do and solves the problem nicely.

How to get updates

  1. To add a feed click the + button.
  2. Enter the Feed URL for example http://feeds.feedburner.com/simplemobilereview
  3. For the Push option set it to on
  4. For the Auto Refresh option set it to on
  5. Click Done. Enjoy your notifications

Push notification for my RSS feeds would be overwhelming because I have hundreds of RSS feeds I read daily. For my friend, however,  this was the perfect solution as the sites she monitors update only once or twice per week.
