I realize I am a geek but my friend showed me another level. I was hanging out with my friend a couple months back when we heard a fire truck going by.  He grabbed his iPod Touch and started listening in on the emergency radio information.  I suddenly realized he was a geek of a totally different kind.  The app he was using is called Emergency Radio and here is what he likes about it.

There are a few things I like about Emergency Radio,

First of all it is a cheap alternative to listen to fire, police and ems responders at $2.99 vs. $200.00+ for a scanner....grant it you get what you pay for. A scanner is instantaneous and ER has a slight delay. There is an Emergancy Radio lite with limited functionality that is free

Second, it is simple to use.

Third, there is a location based option for nearby. So if you travel, it will list all participating jurisdictions that you can tune into.

Fourth, it features a favorites list of different radio frequencies for emergency radio stations that you can add to. There is also a search bar, so if you know the name of the department you want to listen to you can type it in to short cut the extensive list.

For the most part, the frequencies I listen to are online most of the time and the variety of jurisdictions that ER contains is unbelievable. I can listen to my local jurisdiction or any of the big cities in the US. As a matter of fact, ER also covers internationally with places such as South Australia, New South Wales, and even Nunoa Fire Dept. from Santiago Province Chile... How cool is that!

I find myself using ER mostly when I hear the local fire departments house siren sound, I simply turn on ER, select my jurisdiction from my favorite list and poof I get the low down on whats going on!
