Create Easy Zune HD Playlists

by Chris on January 25, 2010

The Zune HD is the best media player out today. From the easy to use interface to the beautiful screen. As a media player it beats the rest hands down. One of the things that everyone does on their media players is create playlists. The iPod was very easy to create them but the Zune HD does not function the same. Anyone that had an iPod, and was used to drag and dropping you media files into a playlist will find that gone when using the Zune HD. So if you are switching, like I did, let me help you.

The Problem

I think the problem with the Zune HD is that Microsoft assumes that most people will load the music from the library. That is to say that most will drag all their media files into the Zune Software then from there put them into their respective playlist. I on the other hand use to DJ so I have a massive collection of music. When I put the music files into the Zune Software I want to put them directly into a playlist that I have pre-created. The Zune Software doesn’t allow this.

The Solution

The solution to this is rather easy. You will have to do an extra step but the end result is an easy playlist for your Zune HD.

The first step is to open the folder where the music files are stored.

The next step is to highlight them all | Right Click | And Choose “Add to Windows Media Player List”

When Windows Media Player opens go into the “library” view.  The songs are all listed on the right hand side of the screen. At the top of the list you can now name your new playlist.

Once the name of your new playlist is saved, go to the left hand side of Windows Media Player and right click on the new playlist. Click on "Open file location".

Locate your playlist and copy it

Now browse to your Zune library folder you set up initially. (if you don’t remember the location just open “settings” in the Zune Software) Paste the copied library in the folder named playlist. Notice that as soon as you copy the playlist a Zune playlist is created automatically.

Now when you open up your Zune Software and go to playlist you will see your new playlist with all the songs you selected.

The only step left is to sync your Zune

If you enjoy your Zune as much as I do, I hope this helps you enjoy it a lot more.
