A few weeks back I was sitting in my office, where I normally have a very nice 4G signal, and all of the sudden I could not get a data connection whatsoever. I went and grabbed my wife’s phone (we work in the same office and have the same phone) and she had a 4G signal and complete data coverage. After several calls to T-Mobile to no avail, my old friend Google finally came to my rescue in the form of a secret Android developers code. I’d like to take you through the process of how I was able, with just a few button presses, to restore my phone to its 4G glory.

While checking out Paul Thurrott’s review of the Nokia and Microsoft announcement, I stumbled across a very interesting statement. He said that the update for Windows Phone 7 has been ready but the carriers are holding it up.
Here is Paul’s quote:
I thought, because Microsoft had pledged to update Windows Phone rapidly, emulating what Apple did during the first year of the iPhone, and to add features and be transparent about its plans, as Apple has done all along. Neither has happened, and my sources tell me that the first mega-patch for Windows Phone has sat undeployed on Microsoft’s servers because the software giant’s wireless carrier partners–contrary to another unfulfilled promise–have refused to OK it for release.

This coming February 11 and 12, T-Mobile is offering all smartphones for free with a new two-year contract. It just doesn’t get any better that that. If you are considering moving to T-Mobile, this is probably the time to do it.
Unfortunately, the Galaxy S 4G isn’t a part of the line up. But, the T-Mobile G2 and the myTouch 4G are both great phones, and if you’re considering switching to T-Mobile, these devices that should be on the top of your list.
Another great handset that just upgraded to Froyo is the Samsung Vibrant, but the latter HTC devices support T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network and can achieve speeds up to 14.4 Mbps. The Vibrant can only get 7.2Mbps, so if data speed is something that’s important to you, go with the G2 or myTouch 4G.

It almost feels like there is not challenge to root an Android device these days. Some devices are rooted before they are released and others hours after release. The T-Mobile G2 took a couple days but if you desire root access to your device so you can install a free Wireless Tether app. You should be warned that this root works until you reboot the device. I suspect we are days away from a permanent solution but for now there is an option.
