This last week I was in the Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, exiting the underground train that connects terminals, when the handle of my computer roller-bag came apart, making it impossible to actually pull it and no ability to retract the handle. Lucky for me, I felt it happening and I was able to recover the screws that had come loose. More lucky for me, I was able to able to pull my Swiss Tech Utili-Key off the keychain and screw everything tightly back together and in less than 60 seconds I was on my way again. When I told a colleague about the incident, the comment was “Good thing you carry all those tools!” I decided then and there that I needed to share the tools I carry. What follows are the actual tools I carry and use. It ignores many that didn’t make the cut long-term. And I didn’t have to spend a lot of money to find quality tools.

Netflix has been under a barrage of attacks from heated rival Blockbuster however, they have another major player in Amazon Instant who is making big strides by signing a huge network like FOX. This gives Amazon shows like 24, Arrested Development and the X-File. Under their belt are now CBS, FOX and NBCUniversal. I do like the Netflix Service but they really have some work to do in the coming year. With Amazon instant being a part of Amazon Prime which is only $79 a year this is definitely becoming a viable alternative to Netflix, especially since you can watch Amazon Prime Instant videos on Android Phones.

The Pantech Breakout, 4G LTE Android 2.3 power smartphone, will be available for order at Verizon Retail and Online stores. The Breakout will have a 1 GHz processor, 4 Inch display with 480×900 resolution, 5 megapixel rear camera, and VGA front Camera all for $99 after $50 mail-in-rebate with a 2 year agreement. If you wait 30 days that will likely be the price of the Bionic. It is good to see more devices in a lower price point.

Damn it! As much as I wanted to write NetFlix out of my life for the lack of caring about their customers this letter speaks volumes. I almost discounted this email from NetFlix as SPAM until I went to the blog. Reed Hastings is doing what everyone wanted, apologize and explain.
I messed up. I owe everyone an explanation.
It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming, and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology. I’ll try to explain how this happened.

I received a very interesting HeyTell message this morning from Rod, as well as the graphic above, indicating that his Motorola Droid Bionic has turned into a battery monster and has gotten to the point where he is ready to just pitch it. As you can see, he is 4h 25m into a fully recharged battery and the phone is nearly dead. The major culprit according to the phone itself? Cell Standby. What does that mean? It means that his phone is spending most of its juice looking for a better signal. This is a clear indication that Motorola is going to have to tweak the Radio code for this device to make it more efficient. This is actually not uncommon. You will recall that when the HTC Thunderbolt (the first LTE device on Verizon) first released, the Radio code was upgraded twice in short order, to get the battery usage under control.

A few weeks back I was sitting in my office, where I normally have a very nice 4G signal, and all of the sudden I could not get a data connection whatsoever. I went and grabbed my wife’s phone (we work in the same office and have the same phone) and she had a 4G signal and complete data coverage. After several calls to T-Mobile to no avail, my old friend Google finally came to my rescue in the form of a secret Android developers code. I’d like to take you through the process of how I was able, with just a few button presses, to restore my phone to its 4G glory.

When you fail to aggressively respond to competition attempting to redefine your market this quarterly earnings report highlights the results 5 years later. RIM sold 200,000 Playbooks, which is a pathetic 2% of the 9.25 million iPads Apple sold. It is the smartphone market that the largest blow was delivered. RIM sold 10 million devices, merely half what Apple sold in the same quarter. Don’t tell me QNX is the solution. Going out of business sale coming soon.
People are fired for such poor results quarter after quarter, year after year. Apple took the crack out of this berry.

A few months ago, to everyone’s delight, Netflix announced that it would finally be releasing an app for Android phones. That is, until you read the fine print. The official app would only work on a few select phones, including the T-Mobile G2.
