Of all the phones that were announced at CES this year the one that stood out to me is the Motorola Atrix. Not for the phone itself but the laptop style docking station that you can get with it. It seems this beast is set to release on AT&T soon. Get those SD Cards ready! At this is evident by the fact that the Atrix has passed through the FCC. if you don’t know why I am calling this thing a beast let me tell you. The Atriz boasts:
When Google Voice was Grand Central I really wanted an option to port my number. Now Google is offering an option to port your number for $20 and I no longer care. Everyone knows my Google Voice number so the need to port was a short term pain. You can check if your number is available to be ported. Porting your number to Google Voice is much like porting between carriers, it results in your phone service being terminated. I assume there is a way to port your number out of Google Voice in the future, but I would check prior to porting.
Google Developers just release a YouTube preview of the next generation of Android OS: Version 3.0 (Honeycomb). This looks pretty slick and there are some things you should pick up here. “Entirely for Tablet” means this is built for Tablet form-factor only. This is NOT going to show up on phones. Credible rumors also state that Honeycomb requires a dual-core processor to run, which makes sense with the smooth polish we see in the video. I love the darker look and feel too. And did you see the mention of GTalk Video calling? Yeah, I am excited too. Now if we could just get this interoperable with Apple FaceTime, we would really have something to crow about! How, oh how are we going to choose from 25 or 30 contenders for the perfect Honeycomb tablet. Yeah, its hard work, but sign me up. [click to continue…]
Facebook has updated their Android app adding some pretty cool features. Facebook for Android is now at version 1.5 and is now available in the marketplace.
The new features include Chat featuring background mode (you can receive chat messages while using other applications) and push notifications (get notified sooner).
I wonder how many people will switch from a classic messaging device to Facebook? I am not sure that it would be my first choice as I am not really on Facebook a lot. However if Facebook is really planning world domination by adding email, then messaging really is a good start.
As much as the press wants you to think that the more apps the better the phone that simply is not the case. What you need are 20 good apps rather than 100 dumb ones. One app that would never be dumb is a Google Voice app. More people are starting use Google Voice. and having a mobile app is a definite must. Windows Phone did not have a solid Google Voice app in the past but Phone 7 has a better future.
Google is rolling out their automatic priority inbox. While I look at the video and think how great this would be I quickly realize I do 85% of my email via a mobile device so this is not really a great feature until it comes to mobile for me. The goal of priority inbox is to present to you the important emails so you know what to read first. This is great if you get various things you want like fantasy football info the is important but not until you are setting up your line up this week. The feature is suppose to learn as you interact with mail and get better. The nice thing is you can star messages to come back to them or if a message is accidentally added you can train the system a message is not important. I am not saying this is like Xobni but it has a small similarity. Check your Gmail settings for the feature [click to continue…]
I have been using my iPhone 4 for about a week now and unlike my iPhone 2G, 3G, and 3GS, this new device has an issue with deleted messages. The problem is simple to describe: if I delete a message on Gmail or any email client, I would get a message stub that appeared with no sender and a date of 12/31/69 on the iPhone. Working as, and with developers, for many years, the date 12/31/69 is all too familiar. I have seen this problem many times in the past. It it almost as common and stupid as the miscalculation of leap year, and yes I have seen that as well. With 100′s of thousands of lines of code, mistakes do happen. But, on my iPhone, it was so bad I was hours away from returning the device. My phone was filled with no sender emails. It was making it impossible to work with legit emails.
This should not come as a surprise to anyone, considering the number of reports we have seen over the last couple of weeks, but not only has Android outstripped iOS here in the US, it has surpassed it world-wide as well. [click to continue…]
The Google Mobile Blog just posted an entry detailing that Google Mobile Search now supports a History function. When I saw this, I immediately pulled up my Android browser and was disappointed that I didn’t see anything. However, upon closer inspection I saw than my default home page on the Motorola Droid was a ‘special’ version for Verizon Android. When I change it to just Google.com, everything showed up correctly. Yesterday Google released its new version of the search results. They added the ability to drill down on the results. By clicking the plus sign in the top left corner you are given the ability to narrow down the results with search terms. Some of the terms are Images, Videos, Blogs and Past 24 hours. Well they have also enabled this feature on mobile searches.
