Let me start off by stating how much I dislike stand-alone GPS systems. I was once a happy Droid X owner and user of the free Google Navigation on Android. In fact I welcomed the birth of every day where I got to taunt iPhone and normal GPS users of how they wasted money on what is freely available, Oh the good old days. As the darkest storm clouds formed over the world, Apple announced the iPhone on Verizon and I awoke owning the iPhone without my beloved Google Navigation. I only kick this off by stating this since this is the history on which I base my review.

The BlackBerry Playbook is a true multi-tasking tablet OS, unlike the iPad. However, you need to change a setting as true multi-tasking is disabled by default. The beauty of the Playbook is that you can navigate to Pandora.com and stream music via the web browser vs. requiring a native application. The problem is the default setting on the Playbook is to pause applications when another app goes full screen. The Playbook offers 3 multi-tasking settings: Showcase (true multi tasking), default, and paused. I don’t believe any of the options are ideal but here is how each works.

Turn-by-turn navigation on smartphones has existed for some time now. However, Google has redefined what a maps / navigation application should include. To a great degree, the navigation included for free on every Android handset has set a high bar for companies like TomTom, Garmin, and Navigon, just to name a few. After owning an Android device, it is difficult to pay for turn-by-turn navigation on my iPhone, as it now feels like a feature that should have been included for free.
