Amazon Kindle Fire Review – First Time User

Amazon Kindle Fire

It is amazing how easy it is to get a good friend to review technology when you hand them the product to play with.  I had Kim review the BlackBerry Playbook weeks ago. This time around I had her review the Amazon Kindle Fire. This will be the second tablet she has played with and she does not currently own an e-ink eReader. Brent and a somewhat harsh opinion on the Kindle Fire, lets see what Kim thinks.

I love a book. I really love a good book. I love turning the pages, feeling the weight of the book in my hands and hearing the sound of the spine cracking when you first open it. What I do not love is what happens TO my books. My children take my book marks, they un-dog ear my pages (something that probably makes my former English prof very happy), they ruin my dust jackets and they hide my books. Well, they will not have the opportunity to do that any longer. I have fallen in love with the Kindle Fire. As long as they don’t figure out how to get into my books (ha ha), I’m in the safety zone.

Nook for Android

Almost a year and a half ago Brent wrote a post about how to read eBooks on your Android device.  Considering many people want to read ebooks on their Android devices, I decided that today would be a great time to update everyone on all of the great new options that are available for reading eBooks on your Android devices.

eBooks have been steadily growing in popularity over the past few years. They are distributed instantaneously, are usually cheaper since there is no cost for materials, require almost no physical space to store, and many, many other things. Oh, did I mention that there are free eBooks? Yeah, that’s not a bad thing, either Smile  Thankfully for all of us, reading eBooks has never been easier. I’d like to share with you a few of my favorite options, everyone of which will work on any Android phone or tablet.

Nook Color

Barnes and Noble is rumored to be releasing a new version of the Nook Color this month, according to a source close to the folks at DigiTimes.

If the report is to be believed, the Nook Color 2 will ship this month (September), and the Taiwanese manufacturers responsible for producing the components are primed to supply enough parts to accommodate as many as 3 million units by end of year 2011.  The form factor should stay the same with a 7-inch color touchscreen, and you reportedly will still be able to email, use apps, play games, and listen to music and audio books.

Kindle Cloud Reader – HTML5 App in Your Browser and iPad

Kindle Cloud Reader

In an outstanding response to Apple’s draconian play to reap a 30% windfall on all ebooks sold through iOS apps, Amazon has delivered an HTML5 reader that matches the functionality of a dedicated app, including offline reading, but hosted through the browser, thereby passing the restrictions imposed by Apple. It is available for the iPad as well as for Mac/PC/Linux/Chromebook platforms running either Chrome or Safari browsers. Further, Amazon has promised support for Android, WebOS, and Windows Phone 7 in the near future. This is the kind of move that could really start the whole HTML5 juggernaut moving along. Right now, it probably take a fairly heavy investment to do this kind of work, but there have to be a lot of other players out there who will follow suit if this goes well for Amazon. I have played with this app on by my PC in the Chrome browser and on the Mac in Safari, and the experience is excellent! Take a look at the Press Release below.

Becareful With Your eReader, I Lost My Kindle3…Again

Post image for Becareful With Your eReader, I Lost My Kindle3…Again

At the end of last week, I found myself traveling from Washington Dulles to Philadelphia, in order to connect to another flight to Houston. My connection time to make my flight was 44 minutes and I knew I had to move 2 terminals over. I was not at the top of my game anyway, and by the time I had rushed to my new gate I realized with a sicking feeling that I had left my Kindle 3 in the seat pocket of my previous flight. Again. Before the door closed, I had time to logon to Amazon.com and deregister the device, just in case. [click to continue…]

Zinio for Android Tablets

I received an excellent message today from Zinio.com, the purveyor of digital magazines. Until this point in time, with the recent exceptions of availability on a couple of Dell tablets and the European Galaxy Tab devices, it has been no joy for Android users. I considered getting rid of the service as I really wanted Zinion on my Android Tablet. However, this announcement today changes all
