HeyTell for Android and iOS

HeyTell is a cross platform voice chat application. It is a hybrid between Skype and SMS which allows you to have SMS like conversations but using the voice vs text. Essentially, HeyTell is a modern day walkie talkie service. HeyTell does not use a username an password, rather you provide your contact details and it creates a signature for you on the network from this device. The challenge is you cannot have a single HeyTell account on multiple devices like you can with competitive solution like TalkBox.

With the announcement of the iPhone 5 only a day away here is how you can switch your HeyTell from one iOS device to another or from Android to iOS.

Penzu–Online Journal-Diary Anywhere At A Discount

Penzu

During our last podcast, one of my picks was the Penzu service. While it is true that there are a lot of ways you can keep a journal/diary, I really like this service because you can quite literally use it anywhere, easily add photos, and now that the Android client has been released, I can truly be untethered in using it. You can do almost everything in Penzu with their free service. However, if you want to really use it to it’s fullest, you need to move to Penzu Pro, which is currently priced at $19/year. This morning, however, I received a notice from Penzu (see below). If you use the link, you can sign-up for Penzu Pro for $15.20 for the first year, instead of $19. Of course, you can try it out for the first month and if it isn’t for you, Penzu will refund your money.

MoboPlayer for Android

One of the things that most excited me about Android was the thought that my phone could be my personal, portable, media/entertainment hub with my games, movies, and music all at the ready.  If you’re like me, though, you’re likely very disappointed with Google’s native video and music players.  After much searching, however, I’m pleased to show you what I feel is the best player for watching videos on Android; Moboplayer!

Android WiFi xFer

A few weeks ago I wrote about how you can easily take screenshots on your Android phone without an app or rooting.  That has been a life-saver for me as I have started writing for this blog as screenshots can be extremely illustrative in a post.  I have always been somewhat annoyed, however, at the necessity of needing a cable to transfer those files onto my PC.  It is a wireless phone, so why can’t I do it wirelessly?  It seems that others have shared this same frustration and someone finally decided to do something about it.  If you’re still with me, read past the break and I’ll explain exactly how you can do this for your self in a few relatively simple steps.

Cockney Rhyming Slang

If you think dry British humor is sometime difficult to detect you need to hear Cockney Rhyming Slang. Years ago my friend moved to the U.S. and his future wife sometime would stare at him trying to understand what he just said, but she would make her best attempt to get the gist. Her friends on there other hand was a different story. They would stare blankly at him then look to his wife hoping for translation. She found this far amusing to entertaining their confused glares, and instead took the trouble to learn “the language” so she could join in on the muse. The peppering conversations around there friends with rhyming slang is well known as Cockney Rhyming Slang.

Hey Tell on iOS

HeyTell is an Android and iOS voice messaging app that lets you send and receive voice messages with friends and family. The app is a hybrid between a voicemail service and a walkie-talkie application. A message sent via HeyTell is delivered almost instantly. The best thing is, you can send and receive messages over WiFi or a mobile data network.

Rather than speech-to-text, HeyTell records what you say and sends it to other users registered on the HeyTell network. HeyTell uses your contact list and lets you send messages or invite friends to join the HeyTell network. Simply select a contact, then press the Hold and Speak button and say your message. Once you release the button your message is sent.

Skype with Video Dramatically Expands Coverage on Android

Skype for Android

Earlier this week, Rod and I looked to see which devices supported video on Android, in order to perform a test with the new Skype iPad app. Sadly, there were only 4 actual phones supported. Very sad! Imagine my great pleasure this morning to be greeted with a Skype update that now supports a very long list of devices. As far as I can tell, the only major category still not supported on Skype are the Android Honeycomb tablets. You would figure that those would be first on the list, as by default all have front-facing cameras. You can download the new version of Skype in the Android Market.
