Netflix App for the iPad is Available

Post image for Netflix App for the iPad is Available

I was wondering if Netflix was going to keep the mobile technology strictly for Microsoft but that was answered today with a definite No. Engadget.com has a report of a new Netflix app in iTunes. This app will do more than let you set your queue. Looking at the picture you will be able to stream movies too. I am wondering what technology they are using as most of the streaming is done with Microsoft’s Silverlight. Silverlight is Microsoft’s version of Flash. The Netflix App is free and should be a welcome addition to the iPad. We will certainly take a look at this app when the Rod gets his iPad tomorrow. I wonder how much impact this will have on RedBox and Blockbuster.

Screwed By Apple

Dear Apple,
It is not like when I placed the order you did not know my mailing address.  Did it just dawn you today to check if Saturday delivery was available for my area.  You have my money and my iPad.  No option for in store pickup, which would have been good customer service.  Maybe you should use Microsoft technology, because they would not make such a mistake. I am a APPLE FAN. I PRE-ORDERED so I would have my device DAY 1. If you had told me that Saturday Delivery was not and option, I would have drove to the store and picked it up. Thanks for giving me no option.  Being a fan SUCKS!!

Sincerely,
Screwed over customer

All I can say is thank goodness this is not my order.  Please tell me Apple is playing an April Fools Joke.

Update: After a call to Apple our reader is getting his $39.99 case for free. Additionally, he has access to an in store pickup iPad in his area so problem solved. If you get/got this email call Apple!

Could Korea Pave the Way for iPhone Search Engine Options

An article in the Korean Herald says Korea has asked Apple to allow Korean users the option to choose their search engine on the iPhone.  The Korea Communications Commission is looking to determine if providing a default search engine limits consumer choice.  I am going to go out on a limb here, but Apple is all about limiting consumer choice.  This is not in a totally bad way they want less options to make for a better user experience.  That said, allowing users to add more then Google or Yahoo as a default search engines is not a huge request.  Heck, it is something a lot of people would want. This limitation of search engine options applies to both mobile Safari and the desktop version.

“Korea is one of a few countries where local search engines are widely used. In this regard, we have sent an email requesting Apple expand user options (for search engines),” the KCC said on condition of anonymity.

In Korea users actually leverage a variety of local search engines so this market has a larger need for search engine options then other markets.  I suspect Google and Yahoo paid premium dollars to be front and center on the iPhone.  It has been reported the Google pays Apple $100 million annually to be the default search engine.  I have no issue with this type of relationship.  What I do wish is as the consumer, I have the option to add another search engine.  Maybe much like Mozilla is paid by Google for search volume, Apple is paid by Google and Yahoo.  Is the limitation here purely driven by revenue paid to Apple?

Such relationships are not bad until you impose absolute restrictions by not allowing users choice.  Are the default settings pushed by Apple ,on the iPhone, right up against anti-competitive behaviors?  Could lack of choice on one of the most popular smartphones actually have a negative impact on competition? Is this how and where government regulation starts with Apple?

Apple Creates iPad Guided Tours

Post image for Apple Creates iPad Guided Tours

For all the folks that are interested in using an iPad, some guided tours have been created on Apple’s website. In the video the iBooks tool is used. Apple also shows off a dictionary function that can pull up the definition of any word simply by tapping it. They also talk about connecting the iPad to a home stereo and the use of a numbers keypad. I still think that using the iPad will be just like a big iPod Touch but let me know if you come to the same conclusion. I am also wondering if this video has convinced you to get one or to leave it alone. There are 11 videos all together and you can see features such as Safari, YouTube, Photos, Videos and more.

Post image for Best Buy to Sell iPad

A leaked Photo on engadget.com shows the Best Buy Playbook for selling the Apple iPad. Apple’s new Tablet device is expected to be released on Saturday April 3rd, 2010. The document goes on to explain that not all stores will get them initially and that it will not be available on Best Buy.com.  Looks like Apple wants to control the online retail option. Nothing about the document stands out but if you want to see some behind the scenes stuff then here you go.

Post image for iPhone Hacked in 20 Seconds

At a Pwn2Own contest the iPhone was hacked in just 20 seconds. Two hackers Vincenzo Iozzo and Ralf Philipp Weinmann demoed an exploit that allowed them to send an iPhone to a web site that they’d set up online. Next, they copied off the entire SMS database on the iPhone (including deleted text messages) to their own server.
