According to a press release which came out Monday, AT&T will release Android 2.3 Gingerbread for its entire 2011 Android smartphone lineup. The HTC Inspire 4G, the LG Phoenix, the Pantech Crossover, the Samsung Infuse 4G and the Samsung Captivate, although, no timeline was given as to when. The Motorola ATRIX 4G received its update to Gingerbread this past weeked and it is expected that the LG Thrill 4G will Android 2.3 once it is released…

Google really seems to be on a roll lately, pushing out great new features and options day after day. Makes me really glad that I chose Android as my platform of choice. The ability to navigate with Android has always been awesome, but the one issue has always been that you had to have a signal (3G/WiFi) to really be able to use the feature. To an extent, that has changed with the introduction of Google Maps for Android 5.7. A Labs feature has been add that now gives you some additional abilities. We will explore each of these, but if you want to follow along, you can find this by opening Maps, and go to Menu | More | Labs. On a tablet, click the menu button in the upper-right corner of Maps. In May, 2011 the Android Market underwent some growing-up changes. Among other features, the Market now lets you filter out apps based on a ‘Maturity’ rating that is voluntarily applied by app authors, as well as automatic filtering that should only show you what apps can run on the device you are connecting to the Market with. Like all software changes, especially one that makes fundamental changes in how apps are handled and delivered, there are bound to be ‘gotchas’ that need to be worked around. Most of the early issues have been resolved, but there are still a few lingering ones that have become very annoying. After trying a bunch of different things, I have figured out some work-arounds that will help in the short term.

Google’s Andy Rubin, via Twitter this morning, said “There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it’s growing at 4.4% w/w.” That’s a 100,000 more than Google reported back at Google I/O last month.
At 4.4% week over week growth, Android activations should pass the 1 million per day mark sometime this October. No matter what you think about Google or Android, these are impressive numbers unlike anything we’ve ever seen. It’s amazing that Android was in 4th place behind Windows Mobile a mere two years ago…

In a recent poll on PCMag.com, the Samsung Focus proved to be a better phone that the AT&T iPhone. In this readers’ poll the Samsung Focus pretty much beats the iPhone in every category and as a bonus is more likely to be recommended than the iPhone is. Microsoft has always touted that customer satisfaction is very high with the platform and it is nice to see this validated independently.
