Except for the very first ROM that I loaded after I first rooted my Motorola Droid, I have used the Bugless Beast ROM’s from Pete Alfonso. I have resisted all enticements to look elsewhere. When the news of the release of the Cyanogen Mod 6 hit, I almost jumped. However, the fact that Google had forced them to remove all Google apps because it was built from source code was negative for me. Yes, I know that I could load all that stuff myself, but I was already having issues with Google Maps, among other things. Then I read some comments about another ROM called Liquid Frozen Yogurt. This ROM is also custom source-built from FRG22, from AOSP Source, and sports custom Slayher kernels that have implemented CompCache, a new potential boon to memory management that is still in testing. So, I bit the bullet and loaded it and I am so very enthused with the results. [click to continue…]

Earlier today Samsung made the official annoucement of the 7-inch Android powered Galaxy Tab. The device looks to be the next popular Android device but we know this changes on a weekly basis. If you are wondering the devices does have a front and rear facing camer so video chat is an option. If you listen to the tech press a 7-inch device seems to be ideal for use as it has optimal weight for and eReader.
The Galaxy Tab will not be available until October 11th. Pricing currently in Europe ranging from €699 ($890) to €799 ($1,020). UK Pricing appears to be £680 ($1,050). [click to continue…]

Beta testing of Audible for Android is all completed and in fact, I think that the version in the Market is actually 1.01. This app now supports both the Enhanced Format (28.4 MB/hour of audio) and Type 4 (14 MB/hour of audio). These can be downloaded via Wi-Fi or 3G directly to your device. You can also side-load by copying your already downloaded Audible books to the SD Card when connected to your computer. Additionally, you can stream any of the books if perchance you don’t have storage room to hold them locally. As always, Audible remembers where you were, even if you listen to something else and then come back. [click to continue…]

One of the really stellar decisions of AT&T was to block the Dell Streak from loading any app that didn’t come from the ‘authorized’ Android Market. That means that if you want to load a beta of an app (Audible, Touchdown, etc.), it is not possible. Even the normal Settings toggle to allow this is absent. One way to get around this is to ‘root’ the device (get root access). However, if you aren’t prepared to do that, the method outlined below will get you there without needing root access. Let’s go down the list here, in order of size. All of these devices will ship with Android 2.2, and they’ve also all got microphones and accelerometers. However, perhaps fatally, these tablets (like some others) do not have access to the App Marketplace. You’ll get your “custom-sized” apps through Archos’ AppsLib, which doesn’t sound like fun. The number of apps is limited and doesn’t update often, although you can usually find most of the most popular available. Google apps will also not be present, which means you’ll have Archos’ replacements for maps, music, and so on. Now, this can be resolved by rooting the devices, and then side-loading the Google apps, but it is a pain and these devices are chronically under-powered. Nevertheless, if you you want is a decent large-screen media player or ebook reader, at the price, any of these might do nicely.

Last night my cousin came over and we got to talking phones. I completely forgot that he had the Motorola DROID so I immediately grabbed his phone from him. The very first thing that I noticed was the Body Glove case he was using. It had a nice feel to it and it fit the phone very well. Since the Motorola DROID has a slide out keyboard it is a two piece cover. Now if your like me you have a big stomach and don’t like wearing phones with belt clips. After seeing the unique clip on the Body Glove I may have to rethink my feelings.

It is almost like every on and their brother waited for this week to announce their up and coming devices. It is almost like Apple has something planned this week and they want to make the hype cycle as short as possible. Rydeen gPad is a 7-inch resistive touchscreen tablet with 800x480 resolution, Marvell ARMADA 166-800MHz processor, Bluetooth, and GPS running some version of Android.
I played with a resistive touch screen recently and let me say that device found its way back to the store after several minutes of frustration and having to go back to using a stylus. The device does have a front facing 2 megapixel camera for video chat. Pricing on this will be key but I would rather pay more money and get a device with great performance. [click to continue…]

Lucky me I give my wife the HTC Incredible and low and behold she gets the update notification early. Before going to bed tonight she tells me the phone told her several days ago there was an update available. I always manually updated my phones, but she who could careless about the update is getting it pushed to her phone. I have to check is RIMarkable Robb is getting the update notification.
If you are a Droid Incredible user you will be happy to know the update is not moving out to mass deployment. If you have not received the update yet you can manually install or just wait for the notification. Either way enjoy Froyo. [click to continue…]

Earlier we announced the availability of the Yahoo Fantasy Football Android App. This app allows Yahoo Fantasy Football Owners to manager their teams and rosters via a mobile phone. I am a huge fantasy football fan but my leagues are on another site. It is a bit of pain to setup a whole new league just to test an app so I put the call out to our faithful readers and Dan stepped up to the plate. Here are his thoughts and first impressions of the App.

Something that I have been looking for over the last few weeks is a Fantasy Football app. Stumbling across the internet I came across phandroid.com. Turns out they stumbled onto the new Yahoo Fantasy Football app. With their app you can check league and player stats and even make roster changes. All you have to do is login and away you go.
