Windows Phone vs Android

I’m a two-year Android veteran, having become a fan of the operating system. I recently purchased an HTC HD7 to test drive Windows Phone 7 (WP7).  I gave the phone a two-week grace period, including a week using the Mango update. I will admit this was a limited test however I had limited time as I was relocating outside of the US. For me, I found WP7 underwhelming in a few areas, and I switched back to Android. Read on to see my top five reasons why I find Android to be better than WP7.

iPhone 4S

Despite “ho hum” initial reviews, the recently announced Apple iPhone 4S  reportedly set sales records on its first day of availability, selling more than 1 million units and expected to sell 4 million units its first weekend. If those projections are reached, iPhone 4S sales will have more than doubled the iPhone 4, which itself broke records at 600,000 pre sales and 1.7 million total phones sold in its first weekend. The iPhone 4S also helped Sprint and AT&T set sales records for cell phone sales in a day.

Viewsonic 10 Pro

Looks like ViewSonic decided to step up their tablet production by introducing three new tablets at IFA 2011 which are all due to hit stores before the end of the year.  First up is the 10” ViewPad 10Pro, which is a dual booting Android 2.3 Gingerbread/Windows 7 wifi only slate device currently scheduled to come to market September 5th for 499 euros (currently $712 US).  Next up is the ViewPad 7x, which is a 8gb 7” dual core Tegra 2 tablet that will be running Honeycomb.  There is no exact release date for the scheduled 7x but it should be released within the next month for a rumored price of $499.  Lastly there is a budget minded ViewPad 7e that is rumored to a 7” Android tablet for around $250.

HTC HD7

I recently broke my loved hated and now sort of missed G2x Android phone from T-Mobile. I figured I’d buy a Windows Phone 7 (WP7) device to test drive for a month or so before I deploy for Korea. I made this decision because I was going to pay $130 for a replacement G2x anyway, so if I could find a HD7 for T-Mobile for cheap on EBay, I’d pick one up and just chalk up the extra $100 or so as a learning experience so I can see what all the fuss is about for WP7.  I listen to Simple Mobile Review (SMR) every week and Chris Ashley from the show is a diehard Windows fanboy and Rod Simmons has WP7 as his flavor of the month.  Because of the SMR guys and Brandon Watson’s Challenge to Molly Wood and Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, I felt like I could take on a WP7 device and use it as my only phone for a month or so. I’d like to say I went into it unbiased but after using a BlackBerry for almost 4 years and now Android for 2 years, I knew it would be hard not to compare the operating systems.
