Like many of you, I have found the default soft keyboard on the non-HTC Android phones to be very lacking in functionality. For this reason, I have tried pretty much all the replacement keyboards out there, including loading a hack of the HTC keyboard on my Motorola Droid. That is, until I found Smart Keyboard Pro, which features multi-touch on devices using Android 2.0+, as well as support for multiple languages. While this keyboard is not yet perfect, the developer has been outstanding in releasing very frequent updates and it just keeps getting better and better. There are two versions: a free and a Pro version. To get all the functionality, you need to license the Pro version. If you find yourself needing to switch keyboard languages on the fly or would like suggestions while while using the hard keyboard, this is for you!

Features of Smart Keyboard Pro

  • Multitouch input
  • Support of several languages: currrently English, French, Spanish, Russian
  • Symbols quickly accesible with long press
  • Language key to switch the layout quickly
  • Dictionary, suggestion, auto-correction (only available in Pro version)
  • Customizable swipe gestures
  • Suggestions with the hard keyboard
  • High-resolution layouts for the Droid and Nexus One

While you wait for multi-touch to show up in Android 2.1, you can experience it with this outstanding keyboard replacement. Give it a try. You won’t regret it. Enjoy!
